Magical Mineral Oil!

Below are some of the biggest benefits of mineral oil, backed by science!

Mineral oil has built a decades-long reputation for being comedogenic and pore-clogging, which is by-and-large undeserved. This factoid/marketing claim arose from animal studies in the 1970s, where rabbits were used to gauge the comedogenicity of mineral oils. Even then, on a 5 point scale the comedogenic score was only 0-2. Furthermore, subsequent human studies showed an even lower likelihood of mineral oil being comedogenic.

Mineral oil is unlikely to clog your pores or cause breakouts (patch test anyways), partially because the molecular structure is simply too large to even penetrate the skin.

  • Very unlikely to be comedogenic, partially due to molecular structure
  • High in emolliency (skin-softening) and occlusivity (water-retaining)
  • Use it to moisturize or cleanse your face, to remove makeup, or as a shaving oil

What it is
Mineral Oil is a general, catch-all term used to describe the liquid by-product of crude oil that has been refined for various purposes (gasoline, plastics, etc.). The term itself is a bit of a misnomer, as there are multiple classes of what can be described as mineral oil.

What to use it for
You can use mineral oil in a variety of ways, below are some popular cosmetic uses:

Skin: Use mineral oil as an effective all-round moisturizer and benefit from its skin-softening and water-retaining abilities. Mineral oil could also help with dry-skin conditions such as xerosis. You can also use it as a cleanser to remove various grit and grime at night or in the morning.

Shaving: Use mineral oil as a pre-shave prepping oil to soften up beard hairs or unwieldy leg stubble before getting to the razor.

Makeup Removal: Mineral oil is hugely popular among those who do the oil cleansing method (OCM) to remove makeup. It can be used on a standalone basis to remove makeup, or in combination with another oil of your chose, in appropriate amounts.

What to look for

Buying mineral oil is a fairly straightforward exercise, as the cosmetic variant is always highly refined, and features such as the type of pressing and virginal quality do not apply.

The important thing to keep in mind is the Chemical Grade:

If possible, check to see if the mineral oil you want to purchase is explicitly labeled as ‘food’ or ‘pharmaceutical’ grade. These are industry-wide terms that indicate how highly and purely refined the mineral oil is. Ideally we’d want to apply oil that’s been recognized as safe to ingest. This is opposed to technical grade oil, which would be used to lubricate a butcher board.

In all though, it is highly unlikely that the mineral oils you will find on store shelfs which are advertised for cosmetic purposes could be sub-pharmaceutical grade, but you never know!

Some Final Tips

  • Patch test your mineral oil to see if the oil causes any breakouts, dermatitis, or other reactions
  • Store your oil in a cool, dark, dry place

Wonderful Winter Weather!

Winter weather is tough on our skin. The outside air is drier, and with the heat cranked up inside, our skin suffers. When this happens, face masks are a great way to take care of your skin by keeping it hydrated and moisturized. Making your own face mask is a fun and economical option that also protects you from harmful chemical additives in store-bought masks. By using naturally moisturizing and healing ingredients, you can nourish and protect your skin with a few items you probably already have in your kitchen. These foods are not only healthy to eat, but also great for your face too. Here is a look at some popular household ingredients and how they can help hydrate your skin this winter.

Moisturizing Ingredients

Avocados are rich in fatty acids and healthy oils that soothe and moisturize. They also contain vitamins A and E, which help to repair damaged skin, and antioxidants that fight free radicals on the skin surface. Avocados are generally gentle on the skin and are less likely to cause the redness and moderate irritation that can occur from harsher masks that use citrus or spices.

Banana can benefit your skin in so many ways. The potassium hydrates and moisturizes dehydrated skin, vitamin A heals dryness, vitamin B protects against free radicals, and the amino acids help maintain skin elasticity and strength.

Egg whites are great for skin because they are high in protein, collagen, and vitamin A, which nourish and contribute to maintaining skin elasticity.

Honey, especially raw honey, is a great antibacterial that can purify your skin and help in fighting pimples. It also reduces inflammation and helps skin retain moisture.

Oatmeal is great for repairing damaged skin because it is rich in amino acids. It is often an important component in face masks because it helps retain moisture.

Yogurt moisturizes, hydrates, and nourishes dry skin with its lactic acid and calcium content. It also contains live cultures that help fight against acne-causing bacteria.

Hydrating oils, such as jojoba, almond, and coconut, are great natural moisturizers that make fragrant additions to any face mask.

Face Mask Recipes

While any of the above ingredients alone can be great for your skin, you can also mix them up and make your own combo masks. To try your own, mix what you like together into a cream or paste, apply to your face, and leave on for 10 to 30 minutes. After cleaning off the mask, finish by applying a small amount of coconut oil to your face—a great natural replacement for moisturizer. If you have extra mixture, you can cover it and store in your fridge for a couple of days. If you need some inspiration to get you started, here are some extra-hydrating masks that we’ve tried ourselves:

The All-Purpose Moisturizer

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • 1 tsp almond oil

The Nourishing Cream

  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 ripe avocado
  • 1 tsp yogurt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

The Skin Soother

  • ½ ripe avocado
  • ¼ cup uncooked oatmeal
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (reduces inflammation)

The Rejuvenator

  • 1/3 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon (helps with circulation, but skip it if you’re worried about irritating sensitive skin)

Feel free to mix and match ingredients or change up the ratios to get a consistency that you like, and make sure to share your favorites with us.

Things to Know About Lipfillers

  1. Like any Younger You treatment, we use the best meterals to give you the best look. For lip fillers, the easiest and most natural temporary filler is hyaluronic acid (HA) such as Restylane.
  2. HA fillers can be easily and completely erased. HA is not permanent. Therefore, the eraser enzyme called hyaluronidase is just a simple injection away. The enzyme will dissolve the filler in five minutes if you’re unhappy with the initial results.
  3. Younger You has the most compatate pricing not just in Dublin, but for most of Ireland. We charge by the ml, and won’t break the bank.
  4. HA fillers last about four to six months. However, if your body is on the thinner side the forulia will be motablaised faster.
  5. Results are seen almost immediately.Due to the treatement resluts can be seen in mintues. Give your lips 24 hours to settle and the swelling to calm.
  6. If done correctly, lips with injections don’t feel any different than real lips. Not even when you’re kissing.
  7. You can choose to have your lips numbed beforehand. The area around your lips can be numbed but the treastment is in no way painful.
  8. There’s practically zero downtime. The procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes total, and the numbing will start to wear off after about 15 minutes. You can go back to your busy life without worry.
  9. You don’t have to go all out. You can choose which areas of your lips you’d like the focus to be. Whether you want to do both lips, just the bottom lip, or the middle of the top lip, you can plump wherever you and your doctor decide will best complement the rest of your facial features.
  10. Ten days prior to your procedure, avoid painkillers (except Tylenol), fish oil, and Vitamin E, which tend to thin the blood. Thinner blood will make the area more prone to bruising and bleeding.
  11. Some slight bruising and bleeding at the site of injection is normal. The bruises should fade after five to seven days. Your doctor could also use a laser to dissolve a blood clot if necessary.
  12. Don’t expect to get Angelina Jolie’s lips. You can bring in inspiration photos, but ultimately, you and your doctor should decide what look is best for your face. You should also expect to increase the size gradually over time — not all at once — for the most natural results.
  13. Anyone who has a history of cold sores should take prevention medication two days before the procedure. Injections could trigger a cold sore.
  14. If you eventually decide to stop getting injections, your lips will return to their original state. Contrary to what you might think, your lips will not turn into saggy, wrinkly skin bags. However, the HA that was injected into your lips has been proven to jump-start more HA production at the site of the injection, so your lips could naturally remain a bit larger, thanks to the previous injections.
